Your Engagement/Wedding Ring Has Value — Put It to Work With a Pawn Loan
Life doesn’t always follow a straight line, and sometimes you need access to cash without having to sell something you care about. If you have an engagement ring, a wedding band, or a diamond ring set sitting in your jewelry box, you may have more borrowing power than you realize.
At Alma School Pawn & Gold, we’ve been helping Mesa residents get short-term loans on their jewelry since 2008. We’ll take a close look at your ring, give you a free evaluation, and make you a fair offer — no pressure, no obligation. If you decide to move forward, your ring stays safe with us until the loan is paid off and you’re ready to pick it up.
What Rings We Accept for Pawn Loans
We work with a wide range of rings — not just the traditional solitaire engagement ring. If you’re unsure whether what you have qualifies, the short answer is: bring it in and we’ll take a look.
Engagement rings and wedding bands are the most common, whether as individual pieces or full sets. Solitaire settings, halo styles, three-stone rings, pavé bands — the style matters less than the metal and stone quality underneath it.
Anniversary rings, cocktail rings, and fashion rings in gold, white gold, platinum, or silver are all welcome. Rings with colored gemstones — sapphires, rubies, emeralds — can also carry real value depending on the quality of the stone and the metal it’s set in.
If your ring is costume jewelry or made from base metals, we may not be able to offer a loan on it, but we’re always happy to take a look. The evaluation is free either way, and we’ll give you a straight answer when you come in.
What Happens When You Bring Your Ring In
If you’ve never been to a pawn shop before, the process is simpler than most people expect. Here’s what a typical visit looks like:
You walk in and let us know you’re interested in a pawn loan. One of our associates will sit down with you and take a look at what you’ve brought. We’ll examine the ring, identify the metal, test the purity, weigh it, and assess any diamonds or stones. The whole evaluation is free and usually doesn’t take long.
Once we’ve completed the assessment, we’ll make you an offer. You’re never obligated to accept — if the number doesn’t work for you, you’re free to take your ring and go. If you do accept, we write up the loan, you walk out with cash in hand, and your ring goes into our safe until you’re ready to come back for it.
That’s the whole process. No games, no pressure, no surprise fees.
How We Determine What Your Ring Is Worth
To make you the best offer we can, we need to understand exactly what you have. Every ring evaluation at Alma School Pawn & Gold covers two things: the metal it’s made from and any diamonds or gemstones set into it. Both are assessed separately, and both factor into your final offer.
Evaluating the Metal
Whether your ring is yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, platinum, or silver, we start by locating the hallmark — the small stamp that indicates the metal’s purity. From there, we take a small sample using a touchstone and test it with acid to confirm that the purity matches what’s stamped. This is standard practice in the industry and doesn’t harm your ring or affect its value in any way.
Once purity is confirmed, we weigh the ring and check the current spot price for that metal. We use both acid testing and Sigma Metalytics verification equipment, which gives us a thorough and accurate read on the metal before we arrive at a number.
Evaluating the Diamonds
If your ring has diamonds, we assess each stone individually using the same grading framework used by jewelers worldwide — the 4 Cs, developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Cut refers to how the facets of the diamond have been shaped and proportioned. A well-cut diamond reflects light more brilliantly and is generally worth more than a poorly cut stone of similar size.
Carat is the weight of the stone. Larger diamonds are rarer, and all else being equal, more valuable.
Color describes the presence or absence of color in the stone. Most diamonds carry some degree of color; truly colorless diamonds are rare and command a higher value.
Clarity refers to the number and visibility of internal imperfections — called inclusions — and surface blemishes. The fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade and the stronger the value.
We use a Presidium Adamas Diamond and Moissanite Tester as part of our evaluation to verify that stones are accurately identified. Once we’ve assessed each stone and compared against current market values, we combine that figure with the metal value to arrive at your offer.
Pawning vs. Selling — Which One Makes Sense for You
One of the most common questions we hear is whether it makes more sense to pawn a ring or sell it outright. The answer depends on one thing: whether you want it back.
When you pawn your ring, you’re taking out a short-term loan using the ring as collateral. You get cash now, and as long as you pay off the loan, you get your ring back. The ring never changes hands permanently.
When you sell your ring, the transaction is final. You receive a one-time payment and the ring stays with us. There’s no loan, no monthly payments, and nothing to come back for.
If the ring has sentimental value — or if you think you’ll want it back once your financial situation levels out — a pawn loan is almost always the better choice. If you’ve already decided you’re ready to part with it and just want the most straightforward transaction, selling may be the simpler route.
We do both, and we’re happy to walk through the difference with you if you’re not sure which direction makes more sense.
Your Loan Terms and Getting Your Ring Back
Once you accept an offer and the loan is written up, your ring goes into our safe where it stays, secured, for the duration of the loan.
Loans run on a 90-day schedule with monthly payments. Each payment covers the interest due, and you’re always welcome to put more toward the principal if you want to pay it down faster. Pay it off early and there’s no penalty.
Interest is calculated in tiers depending on where you are in the loan term, and early payoff can reduce what you owe. Because every loan is a little different, the best way to understand exactly what applies to your situation is to give us a call or stop by — we’re happy to walk through it with you.
When you’re ready to pay off the loan, come in, complete the payment, and we hand your ring back to you the same day. It’s that straightforward.
Life happens and we get that. If a month comes where the full payment isn’t doable, just cover the interest and the loan stays in good standing. It carries over without issue and we move forward from there.
Questions We Hear a Lot
Do I need an appointment to get my ring evaluated? No appointment needed. Walk-ins are welcome any time during business hours. If you want to call ahead or have questions before you come in, we’re happy to chat.
Will the evaluation damage my ring? Not at all. The touchstone test we use to verify metal purity takes a microscopic scraping from an inconspicuous spot. It doesn’t affect the appearance, structure, or value of the ring.
What if I have a ring set — can I pawn the whole set together? Yes. We can evaluate and loan on a ring set as a whole. We’ll assess each piece and factor the combined value into a single offer.
What if I don’t have the original paperwork or box? That’s fine. Most customers don’t. We evaluate the ring itself, not the packaging or documentation. A GIA certificate, if you have one, can be helpful context — but it’s not required.
How do I know my ring is safe while it’s in your care? Your ring is stored in a secured safe for the entire duration of the loan. It doesn’t go anywhere until you come back for it.
What if I can’t make a payment one month? Just cover the interest for that month and the loan stays active. It carries over and we move forward from there — no need to stress about it. Give us a call if you have questions about where you stand.
Can I pay off my loan early? Yes, and there’s no early payoff penalty. Paying early can also reduce the total interest owed depending on where you are in the loan term.
