Gift Card Buyer in Mesa — Alma School Pawn & Gold
Most people have at least one gift card sitting in a drawer somewhere. Maybe it’s from a store you never shop at, or one you meant to use and just never got around to. Whatever the reason, if it’s not getting spent, it’s not doing you any good just sitting there.
Alma School Pawn & Gold buys gift cards. If you’ve got one — or a handful — bring them in and we’ll make you a cash offer on the spot. No appointment needed, no complicated process. Walk in, we check the balance, and we tell you what we can give you for it. You decide if it works for you.
We’ve been serving Mesa and the surrounding East Valley since 2008, and buying gift cards is one of the simpler transactions we do. It’s quick, it’s straightforward, and it puts cash in your hand the same day.
Why People Sell Gift Cards
Gift cards make sense as gifts in theory — they’re flexible, easy to give, and let the recipient choose what they actually want. But in practice, a lot of them go unused. The recipient doesn’t shop at that store. The balance is too small to bother with. It gets set aside and forgotten. Life gets busy.
None of that means the value has to disappear. If you’ve got a card with a balance on it and no real intention of using it, selling it is the practical move. You get something useful out of it — cash you can spend anywhere — instead of letting it sit until the card expires or the balance slips your mind entirely.
Some people come in with a single card they received as a gift. Others come in with a small collection they’ve accumulated over time from birthdays, holidays, or work incentives. Either way, we’re happy to take a look at what you’ve got.
What We Buy
We accept a wide range of gift cards, including general-purpose cards and cards from major national retailers. Some of the most common ones we see include:
Visa gift cards, Mastercard gift cards, and American Express gift cards — the general-purpose prepaid cards that work almost anywhere. These tend to be the most straightforward to evaluate since the balance is easy to verify and the usability is broad.
Amazon gift cards are consistently in demand and we buy them regularly. Apple and iTunes gift cards as well. Starbucks gift cards come in often too.
Beyond those, we evaluate cards from other major national retailers on a case-by-case basis. If you’re not sure whether we’ll take a specific card, the easiest thing to do is call ahead or just bring it in — we’ll tell you right away.
Cards We’re Unable to Accept
There are a few categories we can’t work with, and we’d rather be upfront about that than have you make a trip for nothing.
Walmart and Target gift cards are the two we get asked about most often, and unfortunately we’re not able to take either of them. The resale challenges with those specific cards make it impractical for us to offer fair value on them.
Toys R Us cards are no longer valid since the business closed, so those can’t be redeemed anywhere.
Locally issued gift cards — smaller regional retailers or restaurants — are handled case by case. Some work, some don’t, and it depends on the specific card and how verifiable the balance is. Bring it in and we’ll take a look.
If you’ve got a card that’s not on the common list, don’t assume it’s a no. Just ask.
How Much Can You Expect?
We typically offer up to 50% of the remaining face value on most gift cards. So a $100 card in good standing could get you up to $50 in cash. The exact amount depends on the card type, the remaining balance, and current demand for that particular card.
That might sound like you’re leaving money on the table — and compared to spending the full face value at the retailer, technically you are. But for a card you weren’t going to use anyway, 50% of the value in cash is a better outcome than 0% sitting in a drawer. That’s usually the math people are working with when they come in.
We’re straightforward about what we can offer and why. If a card comes in that we can only offer less on, we’ll tell you that upfront rather than waste your time.
How the Process Works
It’s one of the faster transactions we do. Here’s what to expect when you come in:
Bring the card in with you. If you have multiple cards, bring them all — we’ll go through each one. We’ll check the balance on each card, either through the card’s verification number or the retailer’s balance-check system. Once we know what’s on it, we’ll make you an offer. If you accept, we pay you cash on the spot.
The whole thing usually takes just a few minutes per card. There’s no paperwork involved beyond a basic transaction record, and you don’t need to have any account or prior history with us.
If you want to call ahead before coming in, we’re happy to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the cards you have. That way you’re not making a trip without a reasonable sense of what you’ll walk out with.
Who We See Come In
People sell gift cards to us for all kinds of reasons. Some just did a drawer cleanout and found cards they forgot they had. Some received a card as a gift that doesn’t match their shopping habits. Some have a specific reason they need cash and the cards are the fastest thing they have on hand.
We don’t ask why you’re selling. That’s your business. Our job is to give you a fair offer and a smooth transaction — same as with anything else we buy.
We’re located right on Alma School Road in Mesa, easy to reach from Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Apache Junction, and most of the East Valley. If you’re already planning a trip to the area, it’s worth grabbing any unused cards off the counter before you head out.
Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know the balance on the card before I come in?
Not necessarily. We can usually check it ourselves at the counter. If you already know the balance, that speeds things up — but it’s not required.
What if the card only has a small amount left on it?
Bring it in anyway. We evaluate each card individually. A card with $20 left is still worth something, and we’ll let you know what we can offer.
Can I sell multiple cards in one visit?
Yes, and people do this regularly. Bring them all in and we’ll go through each one. You’ll get a separate offer on each card and can decide which ones to sell.
Do the cards need to be in perfect condition?
The card needs to be readable — functional magnetic strip or scannable barcode — and the balance needs to be verifiable. Normal wear is fine. A card that’s been physically damaged to the point where it can’t be read is going to be difficult to process.
How long does the transaction take?
Usually just a few minutes per card. A handful of cards might take ten to fifteen minutes total. It’s one of the quicker things we do.
Do I need an appointment?
No — walk-ins are welcome any time during store hours.
Other Items We Buy
Gift cards are just one of the things we deal in. Alma School Pawn & Gold is a full-service pawn shop, and we buy a wide range of items on any given day. If you’ve got something of value sitting around — not just gift cards — it’s worth bringing in to see what we can offer.
Some of the most common categories we buy include:
Jewelry and Precious Metals — Gold, silver, platinum, diamond rings, estate pieces, luxury accessories, and loose stones. We test gold using both acid and Sigma Metalytics tools so you know exactly what you’re working with.
Electronics — Laptops, tablets, smartphones, gaming consoles and accessories, and other consumer electronics in working condition. We look at brand, model, condition, and current resale demand.
Power Tools — Cordless and corded tools from brands like Milwaukee, DeWalt, Makita, and Ryobi. Individual tools and full sets are both welcome. Batteries and chargers included with a set always help the offer.
Musical Instruments — Guitars, keyboards, brass and woodwind instruments, drum kits, amps, and related gear. We buy from beginners and gigging musicians alike.
Collectibles and Miscellaneous — Coins, sports cards, vintage items, and other valuables are evaluated case by case. If you’re not sure whether we’d be interested, give us a call or bring it in — we’d rather take a look than have you guess.
If you’re not sure whether what you have qualifies, the easiest answer is to just bring it in. We’ll take a look and give you an honest answer either way.
