Sell Lab-Grown Diamonds at Alma School Pawn & GoldThis may contain: a woman's hand with three diamond rings on top of her left hand, and the middle one has four diamonds in it

Lab-grown diamonds have become a genuinely mainstream choice in the jewelry market, and if you’ve got one you’re ready to part with, Alma School Pawn & Gold is a straightforward place to do it. We’ve been buying jewelry from Mesa residents since 2008, and lab-grown diamonds are something we evaluate regularly. Whether the piece no longer fits your style, you’re consolidating jewelry you don’t wear, or you just want to know what it’s worth — bring it in and we’ll take a look.

What Lab-Grown Diamonds Actually Are

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They’re produced in a controlled environment that replicates the conditions under which natural diamonds form, resulting in a stone that is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a mined diamond. They’re not simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite — they’re diamonds in every meaningful sense of the word, just grown above ground rather than pulled from the earth.

There are two primary methods used to produce them. HPHT — High Pressure High Temperature — mimics the intense conditions deep within the earth where natural diamonds form, applying extreme pressure and heat to carbon until a diamond crystal grows. CVD — Chemical Vapor Deposition — works differently, using a carbon-rich gas in a chamber where the carbon gradually deposits onto a surface and crystallizes into a diamond. Both methods produce genuine diamonds. The method used doesn’t significantly affect how we evaluate a stone, but it can come up on grading certificates, so it’s worth knowing what it means if you see it listed.

One thing that comes up often: customers aren’t always sure whether what they have is a lab-grown diamond, a simulant, or a mined diamond. If you’re not certain, bring it in. We’ll identify it for you at no charge.

How We Evaluate Lab-Grown DiamondsThis may contain: a woman's hand holding an engagement ring with two baguettes on it

We evaluate lab-grown diamonds using the same standards we apply to mined diamonds. The four factors that determine a diamond’s value are the same regardless of origin:

Cut — How well the stone has been shaped and faceted. A well-executed cut maximizes how light moves through the diamond, which directly affects how it looks and what it’s worth.

Color — Diamonds are graded on a scale from colorless to faintly tinted. Colorless and near-colorless stones generally carry more value.

Clarity — Refers to the presence of internal inclusions or surface characteristics. Lab-grown diamonds are often produced with very high clarity, but any inclusions present are factored into the evaluation.

Carat — The weight of the stone. Larger diamonds are rarer and generally worth more, though cut, color, and clarity all play a role in the final number.

We use our Presidium Adamas Diamond and Moissanite Tester to confirm the stone is a genuine diamond rather than a simulant, then work through the 4Cs to arrive at a fair offer. The evaluation is done in-store while you wait, and we’ll walk you through how we got to our number.

Understanding Lab-Grown Diamond Resale Value

This is worth being straightforward about, because a lot of sellers come in with expectations that don’t match where the market currently sits — and that’s not their fault. Lab-grown diamond prices have dropped substantially over the past several years. As production technology improved and output scaled up, the cost to produce these stones fell significantly, and retail prices followed. That shift has worked its way into the resale market too.

What that means practically: if you purchased a lab-grown diamond two or three years ago at a price that felt like a deal compared to a mined stone, the resale value today may still be lower than what you paid. That’s not unique to pawn shops — it’s the reality across every resale channel right now, from online platforms to jewelry stores to private buyers. The market adjusted, and offers across the board reflect that.

We’ll always walk you through exactly how we arrived at our number. If the stone has a grading certificate, that helps. If it doesn’t, we work from what we can evaluate in front of us. Either way, the offer is based on what the stone is actually worth in today’s market — not an arbitrary number — and we’d rather explain it clearly than leave you guessing. If the offer doesn’t work for you, there’s no pressure and no obligation.

What to Bring When You Come In

A few things can help support a stronger offer:sell lab-grown diamonds

Grading certificates — If your diamond came with a certificate from GIA, IGI, or another recognized lab, bring it. Documented quality removes guesswork and can make a meaningful difference in what we’re able to offer.

Original packaging or receipts — Not required, but useful if you have them.

Valid ID — We require a current, government-issued photo ID to complete any sale, per Arizona state regulations.

A Note on Lab-Grown Diamond Resale Value

It’s worth being upfront about this: lab-grown diamond prices have dropped significantly in recent years as production has scaled up and supply has increased. This affects resale value across the board — not just at pawn shops, but everywhere. If you paid a premium for your stone a few years ago, the current offer may be lower than you’d expect. That’s not unique to us — it reflects where the market is right now.

We’ll always explain our offer clearly so you understand what’s driving the number. If the offer doesn’t work for you, there’s no obligation.

Completing the Sale

If you accept our offer, we’ll need your valid ID and signature to finalize the transaction. Payment is made in cash, counted out and handed directly to you. The whole process — evaluation, offer, and sale — typically wraps up in about ten minutes.

What We Buylab-grown diamond

We buy a wide range of lab-grown diamond jewelry, as well as other diamond and fine jewelry pieces. If you’re not sure whether what you have is worth bringing in, the short answer is: bring it in and find out. Here’s a general idea of what we see most often:

Lab-grown diamond jewelry
Engagement rings and wedding bands are the most common pieces we see, but we also buy lab-grown diamond earrings, pendants, tennis bracelets, anniversary bands, and loose stones. If the piece is set in gold, white gold, platinum, or silver, the metal value factors into the offer as well.

Mined diamond jewelry
We buy natural diamond jewelry across all the same categories — rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants, and loose stones. The same 4Cs evaluation applies, and certificates from GIA or other recognized labs are always helpful to have on hand.

Gold and silver jewelry
Even pieces without diamonds have real value if they’re made from precious metals. We test gold using both acid and Sigma Metalytics tools together to confirm karat, weigh the piece, and reference the current spot price to calculate an offer. We buy gold in all karats — 10k, 14k, 18k, and higher — as well as sterling silver and platinum.

Estate and vintage jewelry
Older pieces, inherited items, and jewelry from previous eras are all welcome. Estate jewelry often has both metal value and gemstone value, and pieces from certain periods — Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, Victorian — can carry additional interest depending on the craftsmanship and condition.

Watches
We buy watches as well. Condition, brand, and whether the watch runs are all factors that affect the offer.

If you’ve got a mixed collection and want to bring in several pieces at once, that’s completely fine. We’ll evaluate each one individually and give you a breakdown.
